Happy 2020! Don’t Miss The Chance To Improve Your Skiing And Get Avy Savvy

Fitness for Skiing and Snowboarding Book
Authors interview and podcast link:

The new Fitness for Skiing and Snowboarding book is now available for free to members as a digital edition. Print copies of the book will be available in November.
This brand new resource, written by former PSIA Alpine Team member Chris Fellows and Douglas Kechijian, offers guidance for a fitness training regimen that promotes improved movement and body longevity for snowsports instructors.
Having technical expertise combined with physical preparation opens up new possibilities for skiers and riders.
Here, Fellows discusses the idea for the book, and how it can help professional instructors and their students:
Where did you get the idea for this book?
During a NASTC camp in Portillo in 2017 (PSIA-AASI CEO) Nick Herrin, Doug and I dreamt up the concept. It was the first powder day of the week and we were skiing nonstop runs down Plateau and Garganta, also known by the gringo name…Gargantua. We were amazed at how many good skiers and riders there were, although not abnormal for Portillo. We knew that to ride continuous runs at speed all morning there was a level of fitness beyond the norm. We said, imagine if everyone could be this fit. That moment started us working on the book.
How will it benefit ski and snowboard instructors?
It won’t, unless they make a lifestyle choice to incorporate the concepts into their regimen and teaching. Then they will see increased performance and body durability. They will also experience a long, injury free season.
What new information does it contain, and how does it speak to current fitness trends?
Nothing new. Just well thought through exercises and drills that address the physical preparation needs of all skiers and riders. Don’t expect the hot new drill or exercise that you see your favorite snow sports athlete doing on YouTube. These are tried and true drills that will create solid foundations for athletic movement on snow.
How will this book help instructors prepare for the season, and stay healthier during the winter?
By giving them a physical fitness recipe with the proper ingredients that they can mix and match to meet their specific needs. By building this early season program they will segue into the season being stronger, more mobile and with better endurance. This will set up a good starting point for a fun and challenging season.
Why is it such a timely release?
There is no time like the present to get started on a fitness regime. As Warren Miller said, “If you don’t start now, you will be one year older when you do.
This book is being billed as a resource that can also benefit students. How?
Everyone can use this information to improve. Students have always looked to instructors to provide them with information that they have used to get better. Now instructors can link this information to the student and the student can do research and get the information direct and ultimately be linked into the PSIA-AASI world. It’s a great way to cast a wider net for future instructors as well as future students.

THANK YOU for skiing & climbing with us 25 Years! ❄
THANK YOU for being part of the NASTC family all these years! It has been 25 years since we started NASTC in 1994, and we are grateful for almost 3 decades of skiing, climbing, and adventuring with you.The dream to start NASTC came from Chris and Jenny Fellows and the late Mike Sodergren. The idea was a total immersion ski school along the lines of the great Austrian and French Ski Instructor Academies where students immersed themselves for multiple days. We started NASTC with 6 courses at 3 ski areas: Donner Ski Ranch, Sugar Bowl, and Whistler. Next we added Portillo and Kirkwood. With the help of countless individuals we kept trying to create the best high-performance ski school where true “students of the sport” could get the advanced training they sought and have the opportunity to experience greater adventure and excitement at mt ranges around the world. Mike lived to help plant the seeds, but tragically died with 17 others including his wife Mariam – another beloved Tahoe ski instructor – in a landslide in Thredbo, Australia in 1997.
In 2002 we founded our rock climbing school as well, with a mission to offer all ages and abilities climbers a fun chance to climb with the best guides on Donner Summit. Rock climbing is the great equalizer: when you’re up off the ground, whether 5′ or 500′ of air beneath you, you have to be in the moment, you can neither look back nor forward. Kids are especially natural at climbing, both physically and mentally. Climbing is a great activity for parent/child, colleagues, or as an event activity.
NASTC now offers a rotation of 28 courses at 16 world-class resorts worldwide. We draw from the top guns in the world of ski instruction – the teachers of teachers – the PhDs of ski pros. We are so incredibly lucky to count these instructors and guides as our friends and colleagues. They’ve made a career teaching skiing and helping people truly improve and further enjoy their sport.
When you come to NASTC you don’t just “take a clinic” and leave. You become part of a family, truly improve, and leave with a road towards further improvement. You make life-long skiing friends who enjoy great camaraderie and stay in touch long after the course ends. Heck, we even take partial credit for a few marriages…love birds who met at NASTC!
So, again, our heartfelt thanks to you for being with us all these years. You are why we do what we do, and we hope to see you soon! Here’s to another 25 years of adventuring together!

KIWI SKIER, ALICE ROBINSON, WINS WORLD CUP OPENER ON OCTOBER 26 IN SOELDEN
On Saturday Oct 26, seventeen-year old Alice Robinson became the youngest Soelden World Cup winner EVER, and the youngest WC winner since Mikaela Schiffrin nearly 7 years ago. With an incredible second run, she edged Schiffrin and Tessa Worley out for the win. It was only her 11th start.“It’s nice to start off quite well, but I just got to keep building and hopefully keep it up,” said Robinson, who plans to start in her first World Cup speed event at a super-G in St. Moritz in December.
Robinson moved to Queenstown from Australia at age four and learned skiing at Coronet Peak. A local coach, Tim Cafe, led her through the international youth ranks but the pair went separate ways after Robinson joined Chris Knight’s International Ski Racing Academy in the Italian Dolomites, with Val di Fassa and San Pellegrino as main training venues. She also trained in the past at Sugar Bowl Academy, CA. We’ve known awesome Alice and her wonderful family for many years and can’t wait to watch her bright future!

U.S. House Passes Legislation to Protect Arctic Refuge in Historic Vote
In a historic vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed (225-193) the Arctic Cultural and Coastal Plain Protection Act, bipartisan legislation that would halt the Trump administration in its efforts to pursue oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Reps. Jared Huffman (D-CA) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) introduced the measure, which is the first stand-alone bill the House of Representatives has passed to protect the sacred Arctic Refuge.
This bill would restore protections that were stripped when the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act mandated oil and gas leasing, development and production on the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge. Oil industry allies in Congress used the Tax Act to circumvent normal legislative channels and insert Arctic Refuge drilling into legislation using an expedited process. Approximately 70 percent of Americans oppose development in the Arctic Refuge, according to a number of recent polls.

Last spring I was able to demo several pairs of skis, one in particular that I really enjoyed and found to be a welcome improvement was the Rossignol Experience 94 TI. There have been some upgrades in the Rossignol Experience line. My first impressions were that the ski continued to have great edge grip in firm conditions but was easier to enter into turns and release more gradually out of the turn. Because of the early taper in the tip and progressive side cut the ski performed well in varied terrain and conditions. But the thing that stood out most to me was how consistent and non-jumpy the ski felt in variable snow. I found a bigger sweet spot and a forgiving feel allowing me to increase my speed without the ski feeling nervous or jumpy. This is due to a new technology built into the ski called Line Control Technology (LCT) where the metal is tipped on its side and sandwiched by two layers of rubber running down the middle of the ski. Check out this video by Rossignol about the new technology
The LCT created a very secure and consistent feel as the ski moved through challenging and inconsistent terrain with ease. The new technology has changed the characteristics of the top end Rossignol Experience ski and made it far more versatile while maintaining its solid under foot feel for carving on firm snow. The Experience 88 is still a solid performer and speaks to my traditional roots with its shape and stiffness, however when looking to pare down my travel quiver the Experience 94 TI is on my mind. I highly recommend this ski for those looking to narrow their quiver down, especially when traveling to those exotic locations where a huge ski bag is less than optimal. –Chris
