The Birthplace of Adventure Skiing

When non-skiers think of Austria, Mozart and pastries might come to mind.  But ask any skier what is the first thing that comes to mind when they think of Austria…POWDER! Austria is a pipe dream destination for most skiers.  Alpine chalets among vast fields of powder, cozy mountain restaurants serving up the best Tyrolean cuisine, fluffy down comforters, and seemingly endless runs where every bend and dip reveals another mind blowing view…this is St. Anton.  Spend a week living the dream as NASTC coaches guide you an epic adventure skiing week, trust us its a huge change from your typical U.S. resort experience.

NEW SKI FITNESS BOOK COMING OUT BY CHRIS FELLOWS AND DOUG KECHIJIAN

If you’re a PSIA instructor then this fall, you’ll see two brand-new digital resources created just for you, and – best of all – both of them are absolutely free to PSIA-AASI members. The first is the new Fitness for Skiing and Snowboarding guide, which includes a great lineup of exercises that will help you improve your individual fitness so you can build greater endurance and strength – which means longer and healthier seasons! Written by former PSIA Alpine Team member Chris Fellows (NASTC) and Doug Kechijian (Resilient Performance), who has a PhD in physical therapy from Columbia University, this guide is perfect for professional instructors who seek a solid, snowsports-specific workout regimen. It will be available through the Snow Pro Library app in the coming weeks, so be on the lookout for an update when it launches. Later this fall, a print version will be available for purchase – by instructors and recreational skiers and snowboarders who want to get the utmost enjoyment out of every moment on snow.

VOTE TO PROTECT THE PLANET

U.S. House Passes Legislation to Protect Arctic Refuge in Historic Vote

In a historic vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed (225-193) the Arctic Cultural and Coastal Plain Protection Act, bipartisan legislation that would halt the Trump administration in its efforts to pursue oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Reps. Jared Huffman (D-CA) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) introduced the measure, which is the first stand-alone bill the House of Representatives has passed to protect the sacred Arctic Refuge.

This bill would restore protections that were stripped when the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act mandated oil and gas leasing, development and production on the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge. Oil industry allies in Congress used the Tax Act to circumvent normal legislative channels and insert Arctic Refuge drilling into legislation using an expedited process. Approximately 70 percent of Americans oppose development in the Arctic Refuge, according to a number of recent polls.
