Here is an inside look to what your first time rock climbing would be like. Click on the video to watch as we take KRNV (My News Channel 4) sports journalist,Gianna Giorgi, and photographer, Julian del Gaudio, on their very first rock climbing experience. Corralco – Chile’s Hidden Gem

Just before the Chilean landscape starts to break apart and about a 90 min drive from the main city of Temuco is the Malcahuello Natural Reserve. Within the reserve is the statuesque Lonquimay volcano, on it’s flanks is one of Chile’s best kept skiing secrets – Corralco.
The ski area is just over 1200 acres and does not include the backcountry skiing options. The runs in Corralco are steep with technical pitches coming off the top of the volcano. It has some of the best snow quality in South America and it’s newly renovated hotel is a bastion of tranquility full of natural light and wood. Explore a new side of Chile this summer August 22-29.

    Bike to Ski

Ski Better on Your Mountain Bike

It’s no secret that skiing and mountain biking go hand in hand like apples and cinnamon, beer and brats, yoga and anger management – just kidding but you get the picture.
Why is mountain biking so good for your skiing? Well first the physics involved in mountain biking are quite similar, gravity, centripetal and centrifugal forces come into play when mountain biking over terrain. Much like in skiing, terrain and speed changes the way force acts upon the bike and rider. The skills that we use in skiing to manage force are also present in mountain biking. The body is placed in athletic position on the bike, torso is forward and there is bend in the ankles, knees and hips. When a rider stands up on the bike to absorb terrain, the joints bend and extend fluidly in equal parts to act as a shock absorber.
Movement of your center of gravity fore and aft along the bike to adjust for changes in pitch and pressure distribution along the length of the bike frame. Lateral ! movement of your body is also necessary to balance against centripetal and centrifugal force. Weighting and unweighting the bike is also a necessary skill to manage terrain. These are all skills that are also involved in alpine skiing. Balancing on a moving object that is also affected by forces of gravity is fun and challenging (mentally and physically) and to be able to do it on the snow in the winter and on the dirt in the summer is a treat and makes us more successful at it.

On May 1, The Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) Western Division began its first ever mountain bike clinic. It was attended by 15 participants and four coaches. The lead coaches were Chris Fellows and Kristin Martin del Campo with help from Adrian Evans and Rachel Georgieva. The morning began with balance and alignment exercises followed by braking techniques, hopping front and rear tire techniques and the ability to steer into a corner. The morning tech session ended with high-s! peed cornering techniques. The coaching consisted of error rec! ognition and correction developmental exercises and a discussion on the crossover between biking technique and skiing technique.
The group finished off the clinic by going for a ride where they could practice their new skills. Everybody enjoyed having a session working on cornering, hopping and high-speed maneuvers down a single track. The downhill provided fun and a chance for everyone to apply their new found skills. This was a fun and educational day that also offered a little peek into the future of PSIA-W, NASTC and the offerings provided on a low snow year.
