    MARCEL HIRSCHER RETIRES

On Sept 4, the ski world saw perhaps the greatest ski racer ever, Austrian Marcel Hirscher, retire after the technical specialist’s unprecedented success during 12 years on the World Cup circuit. He had six season titles in each of the slalom and giant slalom disciplines. He’s one of the most dominant athletes of his generation, up there with Steph Curry, Megan Rapinoe, Simone Biles, Rafael Nadal, and Sidney Crosby.

He won 67 World Cup races in all to sit third on the all-time list behind Lindsey Vonn (82) and Ingemar Stenmark (86). Mikaela Schiffrin is closing in on Hirscher’s tally, with 60 wins ahead of the new season, which starts in Solden, Austria in October.
Hirscher also won seven world titles in various disciplines plus two gold medals in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. He won a silver in Sochi in 2014.

AN EASY CHOICE FOR PARING DOWN YOUR TRAVEL SKI QUIVER

Last spring I was able to demo several pairs of skis, one in particular that I really enjoyed and found to be a welcome improvement was the Rossignol Experience 94 TI. There have been some upgrades in the Rossignol Experience line. My first impressions were that the ski continued to have great edge grip in firm conditions but was easier to enter into turns and release more gradually out of the turn. Because of the early taper in the tip and progressive side cut the ski performed well in varied terrain and conditions. But the thing that stood out most to me was how consistent and non-jumpy the ski felt in variable snow.  I found a bigger sweet spot and a forgiving feel allowing me to increase my speed without the ski feeling nervous or jumpy.  This is due to a new technology built into the ski called Line Control Technology (LCT) where the metal is tipped on its side and sandwiched by two layers of rubber running down the middle of the ski. Check out this video by Rossignol about the new technology

The LCT created a very secure and consistent feel as the ski moved through challenging and inconsistent terrain with ease. The new technology has changed the characteristics of the top end Rossignol Experience ski and made it far more versatile while maintaining its solid under foot feel for carving on firm snow. The Experience 88 is still a solid performer and speaks to my traditional roots with its shape and stiffness, however when looking to pare down my travel quiver the Experience 94 TI is on my mind. I highly recommend this ski for those looking to narrow their quiver down, especially when traveling to those exotic locations where a huge ski bag is less than optimal.  –Chris

  • Private Ski Guiding

    Private Ski Guiding

Private Ski Guiding (from $95-$495 full or half/private or group/customized/all levels):

Design your own day! Our private ski guiding day allows you to design exactly the day you want or your group wants! Want to ski new lines all day? Or gain lots more education about backcountry skiing safety. The backcountry skiing is great this year! Your day can be based at the resort, and we’ll tour into the sidecountry, returning to the chairlifts after skiing long, untracked lines. Or your day can be 100% in the backcountry and we’ll tour up peaks like Castle, Donner, Anderson, or Judah Peaks on Donner Summit. This is a great way to get powder turns in well after the mountain is “skied out,” and to find new terrain if you feel you’ve skied everything at your home resort.

During a side country or backcountry adventure with NASTC you can improve your turns also while out there. Your NASTC guide is not only a certified guide, but a ski instructor/coach who can give you pointers on your skiing technique as well if you like!

Rent your AT skis/skins/boots at Granite Chief, Tahoe Mountain Sports, The Backcountry, or Sports Hub in Truckee. We recommend you call ahead & make a reso.

    Holiday Gift Ideas

Don’t know what to get the skier who has everything? They’ve got the clothes, the gear, the gadgets, the season passes, they’ve even booked and paid for a ski clinic with NASTC already? Really? Well then, here’s some ideas:

    SkiA Sweetspot Trainer
If you are not able to dedicate as much time as you would like to your dryland training, there is a tool that can help you ski better before you even click into your bindings. The SkiA sweetspot trainer is a balancing aid that will help you achieve better balance over your base of support (your feet). You clip the device onto your ski boots and forces you to find the optimum balance point as you stand, move around, tip and twist your feet. You find out very quickly what adjustments you have to make to not fall down and what muscles groups need to fire to assist in making and maintaining those adjustments. Check out the video link below “How to Use a SkiA Trainer” with Chris Fellows. http://youtu.be/wAVhaUyUJPA

    V1DIGITAL COACHING SYSTEMS:
NASTC’s MOST IMPORTANT TAKE HOME TEACHING TOOL: V1
Here is the way to get the most out of your NASTC course: you will literally take your ski course “home” with you.  After all that your trainer tells you on the snow, you need to take something home to keep it all fresh on your mind. NASTC’s technology partner for this cutting edge teaching tool is V1 Digital Coaching Systems.  This program will allow you to see your video on a secure website, a virtual “locker.”  You will be able to look at your video at your leisure with skiing analysis and tips from your trainer.  The trainer does voice over critiques and offers drills to improve your skills. You can log on anytime you want to remind yourself what you are working on.  You can use this system for multiple courses to see your progress and continue to receive expert coaching and tips in-between your NASTC courses.  You can even send us video your friend or spouse shoots, we will give you coaching and send it back to your locker room for you to view and learn from.  Sign up for this take-home bonus feature prior to your course by contacting the NASTC office.

Chris Fellows’a books Total Skiing and Tactics for All-Mountain Skiing are available for purchase through NASTC.  The books are great learning tools that compliment what you learn in The North American Ski Training Center’s on-hill curriculum.  They are a companion to the NASTC methodologies and instruction received at our camps.  The clinics and books were designed  to give you the ultimate ski training resources that tie your on snow experience together with view at home learning materials.  It is a specific learning tool that will serve as a reference and reminder of the course content.  Please call the NASTC office to order 530.582.4772.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call.  We love hearing from you!  See you soon!
