Corralco – Chile’s Hidden Gem

The ski area is just over 1200 acres and does not include the backcountry skiing options. The runs in Corralco are steep with technical pitches coming off the top of the volcano. It has some of the best snow quality in South America and it’s newly renovated hotel is a bastion of tranquility full of natural light and wood. Kidz Climb Camp
KIDZ CLIMB CAMP
Dates: 2019 DATES TBA
Price: $125In this popular camp (in its 13th year!) your child will get to climb Donner Summit’s classic granite. Whether beginner or intermediate they’ll thrive, grow, and reach “new heights” during this course led by NASTC’s top guides. Students begin with an equipment orientation, learn how to use their climbing slippers well, and familiarize themselves with a couple climbing knots. We keep groups 5:1, and kids climb a bunch! We break for water and lunch, but try to get them on the rock as much as possible! Join us!!
Climbing is a sport that helps a child’s focus, self-esteem, self-reliance, coordination, and decision-making abilities. It provides very tangible, in-the-moment goals, and in that way, allows a great feeling of accomplishment. It is an individual sport that gives children solo time to process alone, but it is also a “team sport,” where kids work with their guide for safety and success and cheer each other on as each child attempts to reach their goals. Safety is #1 every step of the way. Children climb with state-of-the-art equipment and every safety precaution is taken. Fun is #2! And there is lots of it! Coming away with new found skills and an introduction into a new way to experience the outdoors is #3. These are our priorities and goals for your child!
Enroll soon, this one often fills early.

NASTC Climbing: Group Summits Mt Shasta – 15th year
NASTC Climbing: Group Summits Mt Shasta – 15th yearOn Sunday morning May 13, under sunny, crisp skies a group of strong advanced skiers summitted California’s 5th highest peak, the 2nd highest in the Cascade Range: the dramatic and rewarding Mt Shasta. This represents a huge accomplishment! When you summit Shasta you have ascended and descended a combined 14,000+ vertical feet in just a weekend. That’s huge! We work with guides from NASTC and Shasta Mt Guides for this 3-day alpine climbing and ski mountaineering trip. We start at the Fifth Season shop, sort gear, and do a bag check. Once we’re sure everyone is set, we head up to the Bunny Flat trailhead and leave our cars there. We were a group of 4 plus 2 guides: Chris Fellows and Dane Brinkely. Our group included 3 climbers who flew all the way in from Mexico, from a new partner program called Ski Madness (stay tuned for some big mountain skiing they’re going to be doing with us around the world). In addition to Pablo, Joan, and Luis, our man Jack drove in from San Francisco and completed the well-rounded, fun group. They all headed up to Horse Trails and made camp the first day, did some ice axe and crampon skills work, and a short climb before dinner. The second day they did a more significant tour in order to continue to acclimatize. One of the forces that gets people on Shasta is the altitude and certainly if you come from sea level you have your work cut out for you. Around 10 or 12,000′ we humans start to “feel it.” Its an indescribable feeling: lethargic, lackadaisical, low-energy. Makes it extra challenging to get to the top of a 14,000 peak! So they pushed through and after the tour, more skills work, and an early dinner it was off to bed. Alarms rang at midnite and the guides got the hot water going. By 1:30am they were suited up: crampons? check, headlamps? check, moleskin? check. beacons on transmit? check. Off they went. Nine hours later – via the Helen Lake route – they were on the top and staring across the state’s open expanse beneath. Its an amazing feeling being up there. They had an epic, great ski down – perfect conditions for 6,000 vertical feet – then broke camp and made their way to the cars. Good job everyone! Here is what one of the climbers had to say: “It was an awesome experience… Chris is an amazing human being, guide, skier and friend. I could not ask for more…The mountain is impressive, the views astonishing, the runs long and fun…What a journey! We will be back exploring other routes. Thanks again a lot for all you did for us.”

Climbing Season Has Begun!
The warm temps have finally arrived. The climbing season has now officially begun. The Sierras offer some of the best climbing in the world. The granite found right here in the Tahoe Basin is some of the best quality granite in the world. Rockcliming is a great cross-training sport to add to your summer activities. Rockclimbing is both a physically and mentally challenging sport that offers “in the moment” goals and decision-making, while building strength in your upper and lower body. Like skiing, climbing is a fun sport to do with the whole family or a group of friends. Climbing in the Sierras is another way to enjoy spectacular views of the area, an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful outdoors in serenity. You don’t have to be a ripping climber to make the most out of your time spent on the rocks, there are many easy introductory climbs that offer great feelings of accomplishment as well as amazing views and a fun outdoor experience. The NASTC KidsClimb! camp is coming up soon, July 6 & 7. Is your kiddo signed up? This is a great camp for kids, regardless if they are into climbing or not. The camp is open to beginner and experienced climbers and offers a fun day at the Ropes Course at Squaw Valley, where they will warm into the techniques and challenges associated with rockclimbing. The second day offers a real experience, climbing a variety of pitches on Donner Summit. Safety is our primary concern at these camps, children wear helmets at all times and are outfitted with their own harness. Climbs are set with top ropes so the risk is kept minimal.
Our AMGA certified guides are fun and personable and know the local area well’ they can lead you to just the perfect spot for your climbing adventure. -
The Swiss Machine
Check out this video of Swiss alpinist, Ueli Steck a.k.a The Swiss Machine. This guy is a genuine bad a**! It is always inspring to see athletes pushing the limits and breaking boundaries. You have to admire their passion and determination. The first video is of his record breaking ascent of the Eiger – 2hr 47min. Note that he is free climbing, no ropes, just ice axes and crampons! The second video is an interview with Ueli, how he prepares for his climbs and what drives him – pretty cool!
Ueli’s latest achievement……On April 17, 2011 Ueli reached the summit of Shisa Pangma in 10.5 hours!!! Read the article for more details. http://www.examiner.com/climbing-in-national/ueli-steck-successfully-solo-climbs-shisha-pangma-8000-meter-peak-10-5-hours
