  • ROCK CLIMBING THIS SUMMER?

Kindergarten Slab on Donner Summit (social distancing before social distancing)

Dear Climbers, we don’t know yet when we will resume climbing on Donner Pass but when we do we hope you’ll be up there with us! Privates and groups will join our certified guides hopefully by July? August? Your guess is better than mine likely! But rock climbing is what we do all summer and fall (and usually part of spring, depending on the snowpack up on Donner Pass, which is 7000′. In the mean time, here are some exercises to stay in shape at home! Some are more advanced than others, so be your own coach and take care!

    Russian Twists

Sit on the floor and bring your legs out straight. Lean back slightly so your torso and legs form a V-like shape, bracing your abdominal wall to engage your core. Balancing here, twist your torso from side to side without moving your legs.

    Pistol Squats

A pistol squat is a single-leg squat where you raise one leg out in front of you and lower down as far as possible on the other leg before standing up. It’s a great way to get full range of motion in each leg and build deep strength with flexibility. If you can do a full minute of pistol squats (30 seconds per leg), great, but consider using a door frame for assistance in getting up and down by lightly pulling on it as you come out of the squat. You can always start with regular pistol squats and finish the allotted time with assisted squats.

    Side Lines

Find an open space, mark off a distance of about 100 feet with 10-foot increments. Sprint from the baseline to the end and back, reducing the distance by 10 feet on each turnaround until you are finished. Try to touch the ground at each turnaround.

    Finger Raises

Hold a high plank (or raised pushup position) using your fingers to hold you as high as possible. This will really build finger strength and core, as you should be fighting to stay afloat.

    Jumping Lunges

Lower down into a basic lunge, with your knee straight above your toes, not extending past them. Instead of slowly pushing back up, jump, quickly switching your legs to the alternate position while in the air, landing softly, and smoothly lowering down into the next lunge.

    Box (or Stair) Jumps

From an athletic stance, jump with both feet up on a box or stair. Hold the squat position to the count of 10, then jump back down. Repeat.

Includes 7 nights lodging, 3 dinners, 6 days lift tickets (let us know if you have IKON), small group instruction all 6 days at 4 different mountains, RT bus Sapporo-Niseko-Sapporo, trip organization). Flight to Sapporo not included. Single upgrades available for approx $750/week.

IN A WORD: From the west coast this is about like going to Europe mid season for a week, the travel is NOT that hard! We stay in a lovely hotel and enjoy the BEST cuisine. We work with locals who take us the BEST places. Our hotel is very close to the mountain, making everything convenient. We recommend you stay a night or two after the ski week to explore nearby Sapporo, a beautiful city, home of both the beer and the Olympics!
This is NASTC’s 6th visit to this land of the rising sun and endless pow….a perfect training venue for you. Advanced intermediate, advanced, and expert skiers welcome!

Niseko is truly THE powder skier’s paradise.  Niseko may as well be a synonym for snow, as it never stops snowing here.  Niseko is located in Hokkaido, the northern most island of Japan and it lies just southwest of the city of Sapporo.  Niseko’s fortunate location allows it to receive the winter storms blowing off the Siberian plateau yielding some of the most abundant yearly snowfall in the world (600 inches and more per year!) Niseko consistently has some of the deepest powder snow you will ever ski.  The ski areas are actually 4 resorts:  Annupuri, Niseko Village (Higashiyama), Hanazono and Hirafu.  All are accessible with the same lift ticket.  These resorts have something for every skier (except the fair weather ones): wide open powder fields, immaculately groomed runs, exciting tree skiing and an abundance of off-piste terrain and backcountry skiing.  This area of Japan’s amazing skiing is most famous for its pillows of snow that you can explode through, trails of white smoke following your every turn and face shots that go over your head.

We stay at one of several beautiful hotels very close to the resort base. Breakfast is included and there are Onsen baths at Niseko so bring your suit!  During the week you will be treated to a variety of restaurants, sampling all sorts of Japanese cuisine and experiences.

Japan doesn’t do anything half way, the lift system is modern with lots of gondolas and covered chairlifts to keep you warm on those ever-present snowy days.  Imagine a day of ripping through fresh snow, followed by a soak in a traditional onsen (hot spring bath) watching the steam rise as snowflakes fall gently around you and dinner in a cozy traditional Japanese restaurant with sushi, steamy bowls of ramen, Japanese mixed grill and sake to fill your belly.  If Japanese food is not your thing, don’t fret as there are many different restaurants to choose from and offer a variety of international food. English is spoken widely throughout the Niseko area and the villagers are very welcoming and friendly.  Views of Mt. Yotei (the Mt. Fuji of Hokkaido), a perfect conical shaped volcano will greet you just about everywhere you go.

NASTC will be your guide as you take in this extraordinary skiing adventure.  You will learn how to adapt your skiing to the variety of terrain and snow conditions, maximize ski design for more efficient and fluid skiing and master powder and soft snow skiing skills.  This trip will combine a unique cultural experience with an exhilarating ski adventure.  Round out your adventure ski training vacation with a side trip to Kyoto or Tokyo.  You will fly into Hong Kong or Kyoto and then connect via a short flight to Sapporo.  From Sapporo it is a short ride from the airport through the Hokkaido countryside to Niseko.  The week will be full of great skiing, coaching and fun cultural experiences.  This will be another great NASTC adventure and one that is for sure to stick out in the memory books.

    Itinerary:

Friday – Depart United States for Japan

Saturday – Arrive into Tokyo and connect to Sapporo – Chitose, shuttle to Niseko (approx. 2.5hrs)

SAMPLE ITINERARY (changes will be made as needed)

Day 1 (Sunday) – Ski at Hirafu resort.  Warm up into your week of skiing, your trainers will assess your skiing skills as you take your warm up runs and determine which group will best suit your skill base and goals.  Skiing focus for this day will be centered on achieving a better centered stance, the foundation for good skiing and skill blending.  You will go through some drills and exercises to help you find a better balanced position over your skis.  You will ski a variety of turns throughout the day to help recognize and maintain this ideal centered position.

Evening activity:  Review the video footage shot from earlier in the day followed by dinner in town.

Day 2 – Ski at Hanazono resort.  Skiing focus will be geared towards maintaining lateral balance throughout the turn with specific attention focused on the transition.  You will run through a series of exercises that will target this area of your skill set specifically.  You will continue to develop lateral balance skills through application in various types of terrain and turns.

Evening activity:  Traditional Japanese Dinner at Abucha

Day 3 – Ski at Annupuri resort.  Briefly revisit skiing concepts from the previous day and move towards working on rotary skills.  You will go through drills and exercises that will target areas of weakness in your rotary control movements.  Reinforce rotary skill development and balancing concepts through terrain exploration.

Evening activity:  Review video footage from earlier in the day

Day 4– Ski at Niseko.  Skiing focus is targeted towards developing tactics for more successful off-piste skiing by improving skill blending abilities.  Drills and exercises will be set up to build and develop skill blending capabilities and identifying tactical choices. • SILVERTON, CO 2028

    SILVERTON, CO 2028

    SILVERTON
Silverton, CO is big mountain skiing at its best. This course is for serious powder skiers, no groomed terrain is available. You ski helicopter skiing type of terrain here in the Colorado backcountry without the expense and take your off-piste/side-country skiing skills to the next level as the terrain demands. Silverton is not your typical resort: you leave all the glitz and hustle of resort-skiing behind. What you get is fresh, untracked powder in a quiet and beautiful setting. While Silverton is a lift-accessed mountain (count it: one lift), there is some hiking involved, especially to get to the really good stashes.
Do not be intimidated. Silverton Mountain is for advanced AND expert skiers. You must be comfortable on black diamond slopes, in variable snow conditions and hiking 5-20 minutes along ridgelines. All guests need an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe. No avalanche training is required. If you’ve skied some powder before, are in fairly good shape, and are excited to learn, you will enjoy Silverton. Its an amazing experience.
We stay in downtown Silverton, a 15 minute drive from the mountain (did we mention the “resort” is at the end of a dirt road, after a curvy mt drive up to it?) You will enjoy lovely accommodations and gourmet meals after a full day of shredding around the huge expanse that is Silverton Mountain. We may rent a house and bring/hire a private chef (which do you prefer?)
You’ll be in a skill/fitness-appropriate group, no more than 5 in your group with your personal trainer and guide. You will get top-notch guiding and personal instruction. On this NASTC course – perhaps more than any other – the terrain AND the staff both teach you. You will improve, its an amazing experience.
    Details:
-Ski 4 days in private groups with Silverton guide and NASTC instructor
    -Fly into Durango
-Option to stay in hotel or private home
-Lunch included on the mountain, dinner ala carte together at local restaurants

This “know before you go,” Truckee-based avalanche rescue skills day is a pre-requisite for the AIARE 2 and the AIARE Pro 1. AIARE and NASTC recommend that all Tahoe backcountry skiers keep their skills sharp and current by taking the Rescue Course at least every other year.

Email [email protected] or text 530-386-2102 with any Q, or to make your reservation.

    Venmo is @jenny-fellows-3

Each year more skiers and riders are venturing into the backcountry lured by the opening up of resort boundary lines and the promise of pristine powder fields and underpopulated terrain. However, with more access the risk has never been greater, and the need to know basic safety protocols, rescue techniques, avalanche hazard awareness, and management are essential to survival and having a great time out there.

“My AIARE instructor in the NASTC Rescue Course was so good: kind, knowledgeable, patient. I had taken a Rescue class 4 years ago but forgot most of what I learned. I am so glad I devoted one (fun) day to this important stuff!” –Carlos, Oakland
